SHOOTING
Great pictures are essential in telling stories and as a shooter, I know
the shots I need to get. I shoot with an eye to the edit, often
shooting more footage than I need for as the story is built in the edit
bay those extra bits of b-roll can illustrate the narrative in a way
that words simply cannot.
THE STORY
Whether it's a TV spot, a promo video or a sporting event, it's critical to get the story across. A friend who worked as a TV news reporter said that you have to let the real story develop, and he's dead on. Preparation, active listening/watching and asking the right questions are all critical in getting to the heart of any story.
MENTORING
Nick Bollettieri, the famous tennis coach once said to play with
those better than you to bring up your game, and play with those not as
good to bring up theirs. I believe the same thing is true in the world
of video. I have learned much from those with more experience and gladly
pass my knowledge and techniques along to those on the same path to
help them improve their craft. Mentoring has been important to my
development in my different careers and it's my responsibility to do
that for those who follow me.
